Eating Safe Fish from the Bay and Delta

People like to fish.  While fish is an important part of a healthy diet, some fish from San Francisco Bay and the Delta may contain toxins, such as mercury and PCBs. Below is information about fish or shellfish that’s considered safe and not safe to eat. 

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) also has information on fish advisories and safe eating guidelines (https://oehha.ca.gov/fish/advisories).

The San Francisco Bay Fish Project was a two-year project to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals from eating San Francisco Bay fish. Goals of the project were to:

  • Increase the public’s awareness of how to reduce their exposure to PCBs and mercury when eating San Francisco Bay fish; and
  • Fulfill the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board’s (Water Board) permit requirements.

Under the Project, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) worked with community groups, local agencies, Native American tribes, and others to raise public awareness about fish contamination issues in San Francisco Bay, and support community-based projects to reduce exposure to chemicals from fish consumption.
