How to Prevent Pollution

Here are things you can do at home to help prevent stormwater pollution:

  • Reuse and recycle items and keep trash out of gutters and storm drains. Go to our Recycle page for links to information on how and where to take recyclables.
  • Properly recycle or dispose of Household Hazardous Waste. Our Household Hazardous Waste page has links to information about household hazardous waste facilities in Contra Costa County, including locations, schedules, and materials accepted.
  • Use less-toxic products to control pests in your yard and garden and to protect your pets. Compost your yard waste and keep it out of gutters and storm drains. Our Yards, Gardens, and Pets page has information on how to control common pests and how to maintain a healthy garden and lawn.
  • Recycle used motor oil and filters, and other automotive fluids, by taking them to a certified used oil collection site. Information and locations can be found on our Auto Care page. And take your car to a commercial car wash instead of washing it at home.
  • Report illegal dumping and spills to gutters and storm drains by calling 1-800-NO DUMPING (1-800-663-8764). More information is on our Report Illegal Dumping and Spills page.
