Two Walnut Creek elementary school students tied for second place in the 14th annual Contra Costa Clean Water Program environmental art contest promoting the recycling of used motor oil and filters. Cailee Abesamis (top), a third-grader from the Palmer School, and Ana Greer (below), a fourth-grader at Indian Valley Elementary, each won $750 to be used toward a new laptop computer. Mr. Funnelhead, the program’s mascot, awarded the winners their prizes May 17 at their schools. Video taken from the event will be used for a 10-minute television program, “The Mr. Funnelhead Calendar Art Ceremony,” to be shown throughout the County on local community access channels. The first place winner is Tania Perez, a fourth-grader from Tara Hills Elementary School in San Pablo, who won $1,000 to be used toward a laptop. There were 445 entries in the 2010 contest. Perez’s winning art will grace 10,000 refrigerator magnets to be distributed throughout Contra Costa County. That design, those of Greer and Abesamis plus the next nine ranked artworks will be included in the 2011 Mr. Funnelhead Oil Buster’s Calendar.
