A Palmer School third-grader recently was one of two second-place winners in the Contra Costa Clean Water Program’s 12th annual environmental art contest to promote the recycling of used motor oil and filters.

Sophia Colello won $750 toward the purchase of a new laptop computer from Paramount Technology of Concord.

Sophia was one of 364 entries in this year’s art poster contest, which promotes keeping used oil out of storm drains and from anyplace where it would pollute water that flows into creeks, streams or bays.

The May 14 awards ceremony will be used for a 30-minute television program entitled “The Mr. Funnelhead Show” that is shown throughout Contra Costa County on local community access channels.

The first place winner is Manisha Rattu, a fifth-grader from Pittsburg; the other second-place winner is Gabriel Pierce, a second grade student from Oakley.
